More than just refreshing!
Though full of water (90% more or less!), melons are nonetheless very interesting from a nutritional point of view. In addition to being naturally low in calories, they contain precious nutrients—most notably vitamin C, folate, and potassium. And the darker orange the flesh, the more beta-carotene (an antioxidant in the carotenoid family) it contains.
Consuming
Wash melons under lots of running water, and then use a clean brush to clean the surface with hot water. It is also important to refrigerate melons immediately after cutting them.
Storage
Despite a sturdy appearance, the melon is in fact delicate. If very ripe when purchased, refrigerate it right away. If not fully ripe however, let it ripen at room temperature until ready to serve and then store it in the
fridge. Since melons easily absorb odours from other foods, place them in the fruit drawer or in an air-tight container when cut.
Pro’s tip
To fully enjoy the great taste of melon, remove it from the fridge and set at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes before serving. Its generous aromas will tantalize your senses.
