When you choose certain products over others, you improve conditions for small producers and protect the environment. Fairtrade certified products guarantee fair income for workers and producers and have a lower environmental impact.

At IGA, we believe in supporting ethical products. Since 2007, we have partnered with Equifruit, the Canadian supplier of certified organic and Fairtrade bananas. They are committed to ensuring fair practices across the board, especially for farmers, in an industry that has long been problematic. We also carry several Fairtrade products, such as coffee, tea, herbal tea, chocolate, and quinoa.

WHAT DO COMMUNITIES DO WITH THE FAIRTRADE PREMIUM?

The money raised through the Fairtrade Premium is reinvested directly into the community. This money is used to set up health and education projects, expand access to drinking water, implement health insurance, and improve agricultural techniques that increase revenue.

In ten years of partnership with our certified organic and Fairtrade banana supplier Equifruit, approximately US$1 million has been reinvested in environmental, social, and economic projects chosen by growers primarily in Ecuador and Peru.
