Sobeys Québec-IGA distribution centre in Terrebonne

Making responsible choices, from warehouses to stores: Sobeys Québec-IGA distribution centre in Terrebonne receives LEED® silver certification rating

Sobeys Québec is proud to announce that its automated distribution centre in Terrebonne was recently awarded the LEED® silver certification rating.

Montréal, January 20, 2015 – Sobeys Québec is proud to announce that its automated distribution centre in Terrebonne was recently awarded the LEED® silver certification rating. This news is closely aligned with Sobeys Québec's desire to construct green buildings in an environmentally responsible manner.

"We have committed a number of years to improving the energy efficiency of our various buildings and we are lucky to be collaborating with grocers who take sustainable development to heart," explains Daniel Côté, Vice President, Distribution and Logistics for Sobeys Québec. "We are extremely proud to have obtained this certification for our Terrebonne warehouse. This strengthens our network and allows us to truly impact our environment."

Distribution center

An exceptional, proudly ecological, automated distribution centre

The Terrebonne distribution centre is the first automated distribution centre for a grocery retailler in Quebec, and the second in Canada, following on the heels of the Sobeys distribution centre that opened in Vaughan, Ontario in 2009. Seven storeys high, its leading-edge technology increases efficiency and enables customized deliveries based on each retailer’s needs. It benefits most notably from:

  • a reclamation system for the waste heat produced by conveyor belt motors and other automated equipment
  • a "white" roof made of recycled materials which reduces heat transfer, uses less electricity, and avoids the heat island effect
  • the maximization of natural light and use of light-emitting diode (LED) lamps, many of which are motion-activated
  • various water conservation and management features including electronic faucets

Sobeys Québec’s trailblazing buildings

In 2010, Sobeys Québec’s distribution centre in Trois-Rivières was already the first refrigerated distribution centre in Canada to become LEED® certified when it earned gold certification in addition to numerous other distinctions.
Furthermore, in 2007, the IGA supermarket in Saint-Pascal de Kamouraska was the first supermarket in Canada to become LEED® certified. "And following on the heels of the Kamouraska store, the Cookshire, Rivière-des-Prairies, Gatineau, and Ahuntsic IGA stores have also received their LEED® certification, and the Duchemin family store in Ville Saint-Laurent is currently involved the certification process, following all the standards required for LEED® silver certification at the site of their IGA store that’s scheduled to open in June 2016," adds Côté.

What is LEED® certification?

Since the very beginning of the project, the design and construction teams have been following the process set out by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). The building underwent the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)® Green Building Rating SystemTM right from the start. In order to earn LEED® silver certification, the centre has been evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • ecological site design
  • efficiciency of water management
  • energy and atmosphere
  • materials and resources
  • quality of interior environments
  • innovation and design process

So it is with great pride that Sobeys Québec continues to reflect upon and integrate more sustainable solutions into its network.
