My holiday menu

Thinking of hosting a vegetarian dinner this holiday season? Well, let me tell you—the absence of meat isn’t drab. In fact, it’s quite the opposite!

I invite you to discover the richness and diversity of a vegetarian meal, starting with a comforting bowl of grilled vegetable soup. Spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cumin lend an exotic touch to this recipe, which will please even the pickiest of eaters.

As the main dish, I’ve opted for a pineapple tofu ham, the perfect recipe to make you fall in love with tofu, an often-misunderstood ingredient in the culinary world. The smoky aromas are sure to recall the taste of a traditional roasted ham.

I’ve also included one of my more popular dishes: millet pie! A new take on a Christmas classic, this flavourful pie is just as scrumptious as traditional tourtière…I guarantee it!

My top 5 tips to surviving the holidays

  1. 1. Spread the magic of Christmas

The holidays start earlier and earlier in the stores; so early, in fact, that come December 24, we’re already fed up with Christmas music! Why not dust off your old guitar and improvise a family choir? With a little luck, you might even get grandma to shed some tears of joy!

  2. 2. Take some time to relax

For some people, the holidays can be one giant rush against the clock. With all the office parties, family gift exchanges, and get-togethers, it can be hard to find the time to just breathe. It’s important to stay in control of your time; don’t hesitate to set a day aside to just relax . . . and digest all the tourtière you ate at your mother-in-law’s!

  3. 3. Simplify the gifts

In the world of excessive consumerism we live in, I invite you to rethink this year’s gifts. As exciting as a gift exchange can be for kids, it can be a bit of a headache for adults. A hand-written card is often more appreciated than another pair of socks.

  4. 4. Lend a helping hand

As a vegan, I’ve gotten into the habit of bringing my meal with me when invited to someone’s home. I like to bring homemade dishes to share with the other guests. Don’t hesitate to offer to bring something to your next get-together, particularly if you have dietary restrictions—your host will thank you!

  5. 5. Be active

Get up and move as a family during the holidays! Some of the best conversations I’ve had with family members were during leisurely strolls. Go to a yoga class, take the kids sliding or skating . . . then treat yourself to a day at the spa when you’re done!
