What are you doing for the environment?

The environment is a major concern for IGA merchants, as countless initiatives carried out over the years demonstrate. The IGA store in Saint-Pascal-de-Kamouraska was the first supermarket in Canada to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, proof of the leadership shown by IGA merchants in sustainable building.

Keen to help our customers adopt green habits, we also launched the Fonds Éco IGA. Every year, $1 million is allocated to the financing of environmental projects and initiatives such as the distribution of rainwater barrels throughout Quebec.

What does independent/affiliated merchant mean?

An independent or affiliated merchant owns the store. This owner has a supply contract with a distributor, and both partners share responsibilities. The distributor is often responible for negotiating with suppliers and for advertising. The merchant is responsible for the store’s day-to-day operations, such as buying and staff management. The independent or affiliated merchant has more freedom than a franchisee and can adapt the store’s selection of products to the local market, yet still enjoy the support of a major industry player.

What are your local buying policies?

IGA and IGA extra merchants are deeply committed to promoting local buying, supporting regional producers, and offering a range of local, good-quality food products, with the goal of fostering better health and eating habits for all. We firmly believe that it is our responsibility to help Quebeckers to improve their quality of life, particularly through healthy eating, which begins with support for the Quebec agro-food sector.

Here are a few of our initiatives:
  • “The joy of eating better” movement.
  • The “Encourage our Quebec producers” campaign.
  • Our artisan cheesemaker program, an initiative that promotes 16 artisanal cheeses produced exclusively for the IGA banner (learn more).
  • IGA ensures that Quebec seafood products are available in season and does everything possible to offer local products that meet sustainable fishing standards (learn more).
  • A few years ago, IGA developed an exclusive program to promote Nagano pork. We also support entrepreneurs from the Quebec food industry, including Jérôme Ferrer, Chocolats Favoris and Moishes steakhouse (learn more).

Moreover, in 2009, IGA independent merchants, in partnership with Aliments du Québec, were the first supermarkets to identify Quebec products on their shelves by means of blue labels (learn more).
