How to make a good iced coffee

In the middle of a heat wave, replace your cup of hot coffee with an ultra-refreshing iced coffee. There’s no need to go to a café to enjoy it, you can simply prepare one at home. Here are some ways to make one this summer.

The classic iced coffee

For an espresso-based iced coffee, simply make it directly in a glass filled with ice cubes. Espresso is already very concentrated, so it doesn’t need to be diluted. As it sinks in a few seconds, it cools on contact with ice cubes that don’t have time to melt.

Cold brew

This type of coffee has gained popularity in recent years. To prepare it, brew coffee beans in water very slowly in the refrigerator. This is the most optimal way to drink cold filter coffee. If you simply pour filter coffee over ice cubes, it will be far too diluted because they melt too quickly. There are decanters specially designed to brew cold coffee. If you don’t have one, here’s how:

  1. In a pitcher, mix 4 cups (1 litre) of water with 3/4 cup (65 g) of medium roasted coffee beans, coarsely ground.
  2. Let stand in the refrigerator overnight.
  3. Pour the coffee into a filter (or paper filter) placed in a filter holder (pour-over type), above a container. Let the coffee drain completely before serving.

To add a gourmet touch to your iced coffee, pour in a little sweetened condensed milk, Vietnamese-style.

What about milk?

An iced latte is also a summer pleasure. You can simply add milk, or the vegetarian drink of your choice, to your coffee, but it’s even better if it’s foamed. Some electric milk frothers have a control to froth the milk cold. You can also foam it easily by pouring it into a glass jar (Mason jar-style) and shaking vigorously until it forms a beautiful foam.
