For a healthy winter

In winter, cold weather, lack of light and fatigue can take a toll on our mental and physical health.
Unfortunately, there are no magic foods to eat to ensure that you stay healthy all winter long and don’t get
any infections. However, a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition, exercise and sleep habits can help
protect you. Here are some easy tips to get you through our Quebec winter.
Colorful and varied diet
In winter as in summer, the important thing is to have a varied diet composed mainly of fresh foods that are as
unprocessed as possible. During the cold season, I sometimes find it difficult to have a varied diet of fruits and
vegetables. However, we can choose from many local vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots, turnips, parsnips, beets
and cabbage, not to mention the famous Quebec apples. By choosing a variety of fruits and vegetables, you not only
ensure appetizing dishes, but also a varied intake of vitamins and minerals. Did you know that green and orange
vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes and cabbage contain vitamin A? Vitamin A is known to play an important
role in the health of the skin and mucous membranes, which are our first line of defense against infection. Go ahead
and put some color on your plate.
Don’t forget to hydrate
In winter, with the cold, it is sometimes more difficult to feel thirsty. However, it is no less important to stay
well hydrated. Instead of limiting yourself to water, consider tea, herbal tea, hot water with lemon, or a good
broth. By increasing your choices, you’ll probably want to hydrate more. Don’t neglect the presentation,
use beautiful glasses or your favourite mug, and add citrus wedges or fresh herbs to your drink.
The importance of Morpheus
Don’t underestimate the effect that a good night’s sleep can have on your overall health. To help you
sleep better, avoid screens before bed. Why not leave your cell phone in a room other than your bedroom? That way
you won’t be tempted to look at it before you go to sleep. I know it’s not always easy, but go to bed
early to ensure you have a healthier day the next day. Do something relaxing before you go to sleep. Read a book,
drink herbal tea, knit or meditate to help you fall asleep more easily.
One last piece of advice: dress warmly and get outside. Go walking, skating, sliding or skiing, the important thing
is to move and have fun.
