Preheat oven to 180˚C (350˚F).
- Grease a 23-cm (9-inch), 1.5-litre round cake tin. In a small bowl, mix melted butter and brown sugar. Spread the mixture over the bottom of the greased tin. Arrange pear slices on top of brown sugar mixture, overlapping to form a circle and cover the entire pan. Set aside.
- Using an electric mixer, combine remaining butter and brown sugar in a bowl. Add eggs and beat until mixture is pale and light. Stir in applesauce and molasses, and mix until batter is smooth.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Gradually stir dry ingredients into molasses mixture, mixing until smooth. Spread batter over pears.
- Bake cake in oven for 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. Allow cake to cool for 10 minutes before inverting onto a serving platter. Enjoy!
